The deadline for many shop owners is 30.06.2020 – End Of Life for Magento 1.
The end of support for all versions of the shop software Magento 1 confronts many shop owners with a big challenge – the decision how to deal with their outdated shop system.
Of course, End Of Life (EOL) doesn’t mean the complete end for Magento 1, but continuing to use this software carries a big risk.
As long as nothing happens, a further operation of the shop on Magento 1 works of course, but this is comparable to driving a car without TÜV – it means a high risk for shop owner and also user:
This is now the all-important question for all shop owners of a Magento 1 shop:
There are 3 different approaches:
In the future, this means stepping onto unsafe ice, taking a high risk, first and foremost a high security risk for yourself and your customers, and working with unreliable software.
MageOne provides a solution for the continued secure operation of the software. MageOne will continue to provide support for Magento 1 after the end of life, in terms of security and compatibility with new PHP versions.
A free alternative is the OpenMage project. This is an association of developers with Magento LTS (“Long Term Support”) who unofficially release enhancements, security fixes and compatibility adjustments for new PHP versions.
However, OpenMage does not yet solve the problem with interfaces to payment service providers, and it may well be that the first problems in this regard are still some way off. It is important to make sure that you are informed in time if the interface in your webshop is no longer supported by the payment service provider.
Since the end of 2015, Magento has officially released Magento 2 as the successor to Magento 1. However, this is not an update, but represents a migration of the shop system. This means for the shop owners of a Magento 1 webshop a long and also expensive process, where the system has to be partially rewritten.
The reviews on the market about Magento 2 are very differentiated and one could almost speak of a religious war. The fact is that Magento 2 does not yet offer an API first approach technologically. In addition, rumors are again forming on the market that speak of a renewed sale of Magento to a willing investor.
One of the shop software now supported by international concepts and widely used in Europe is Shopware. With Shopware 6, Shopware has just recently released a new version with an API first approach and headless.
The migration tool that supports the change to Shopware 6 offers functions that make a change from Magento 1 to Shopware 6 efficient and pragmatic.
Since many shop owners will not manage the complete change of their webshop to Shopware 6 until the end of June, Shopware cooperates with MageOne, who guarantee the security of the operation of the Magento 1 shop software even after the End Of Life with security updates and technical adjustments. Shopware takes over the costs of the use of MageOne for 6 months with a change to their shop software with us as Shopware partner for the shop operator, in order to have sufficient time available for the transition and/or the migration. This means that the relaunch of the shop can be carried out in peace.
