rich & royal - a German fashion company has been established in the modern women's premium segment since 2006. The fashion manufacturer uses various distribution channels to sell its fashion and accessories collections. Among other things, the fashion manufacturer works with selected retailers who sell its products in their brick-and-mortar shops nationally and internationally. The brand is also distributed via wholesale channels, which means that it sells its products to other retailers and wholesalers who then offer them in their own shops or online shops.

As a D2C sales channel, rich & royal operates its own brick-and-mortar stores and its own online shop, which went live in 2014. Until the beginning of 2020, the international online shop ran under the domains richandroyal.de, richandroyal.ch and richandroyal.eu on the Magento 1 shop system. After it was announced that support for Magento 1 would be discontinued, a new e-commerce era began for rich & royal.

OUR TASK

With the "end-of-life" of Magento 1, rich & royal was looking for a future-proof shop system that is flexibly scalable and enables a fast time-to-market. From an economic and strategic point of view, rich & royal decided in favor of a Shopify migration. The dynamic platform is made for speed and effective scaling, so that the business can be easily adapted and expanded to meet new requirements at any time.

The previous Magento 1 store system was connected to the rich & royal logistics and fulfillment system. The challenge was to ensure that the transfer of all data, such as product data, images, etc., was seamless for all 3 online stores de, ch and eu. It also had to be ensured that the new Shopify online store could synchronize orders and inventory information with the previous fulfillment system in real time.

THE IDEA

The migration from Magento 1 to Shopify is realized as an MVP so that rich & royal can get an impression of what the new online store could look like within just 2 weeks. This allows the customer to check at an early stage whether the new Shopify online store meets the requirements in order to avoid making wrong investments. 

Furthermore, the online store, which in addition to sales also serves as an important channel for image building, should create more benefits for end customers. The positive user experience should come to the fore. Users must also be guided to their desired destination quickly, intuitively and enthusiastically.

THE IMPLEMENTATION

The migration from Magento 1 to Shopify was implemented completely agile according to the MVP approach. For this procedure, the data from the previous Magento online store was imported into the new Shopify store. With the help of an external solution, all data (article data, images, etc.) was transferred seamlessly and error-free. This efficient process does not require any programming or transformation of the data.

For the further implementation of the project, the external logistics company that handles rich & royal's fulfillment had to be connected. An individual interface was built for this purpose, which is implemented as a private app. This runs on its own code base and its own app server, which was set up for rich & royal. The interface was implemented on a php basis. By implementing the specifications of Shopify and PVS, we have enabled the automated order transfer and stock reconciliation processes. Apart from the ERP system for inventory data, prices, etc., Shopify does not use any external systems. Instead, apps from the Shopify ecosystem are integrated. rich & royal relies on a marketing app, among other things, to be able to map the “wish list” feature in the online store. Furthermore, the fashion company uses the workflow engine “Shopify Flow”, which is a central component in the process world of their online business.

The online store based on Shopify focuses on an emotional and clear approach. Lots of white space and large image formats draw attention to the content and create a clear structure. The emotional image presentation conveys the value of the premium products.

The end customer experiences a better user experience by finding fashion items more quickly thanks to improved filter and sorting options. In addition to the classic navigation via a mega menu and the product categories, it is also possible to filter the selection via color filters (color swatches) and attributes (product tags). Thanks to the responsive design, the end customer now experiences optimal display and usability on both mobile devices and desktops.

The entire project duration up to the launch of the 3 shops de, ch and eu took only 3 months - from the starting point of the data import, the entry of new collection data to the customization of the theme. rich & royal now benefits from a future-proof online shop that no longer experiences any downtime when importing new data from other collections. The boost in flexibility, stability and performance is enormous.
