Between Hype, Reality, and Strategic Urgency: Why the Future of Retail Depends on AI Readiness – and What Really Matters Now
Artificial Intelligence is no longer just a buzzword. In retail, it has become a key driver for efficiency, personalization, and sustainable growth. But how prepared are retail companies truly when it comes to their AI readiness? Where does the C-level stand: Are they visionaries, in denial, or already reshaping strategy with AI at the core?
Relevance recognized – Impact underestimated
Awareness of AI’s potential has reached the executive level. But that’s not enough.
What really matters is whether companies grasp the full scope of the transformation — and are willing to realign their business models, processes, and data architecture accordingly.
History offers a clear warning: blind spots and hesitation can be fatal.
The Kodak-Trap
Kodak is considered the inventor of digital photography.
The company was well aware of the significance of this invention early on – but wasn’t willing to apply that insight to its own business. Instead of shifting its core from analog film to digital, Kodak stuck to the familiar. This reluctance ultimately led to the company’s bankruptcy in 2012.
“Recognizing relevance isn’t enough – it must be paired with understanding the full impact and a readiness to adapt.”
AI is expected to transform entire value chains. Yet many leadership teams are still not fully anticipating the scope of this shift. While technologies continue to advance, many organizations lag behind in AI readiness. What’s missing is, on the one hand, the technical infrastructure – and on the other, a strategic, cultural, and data-driven foundation.
The following points highlight what companies need to focus on if they want to be – or become – truly AI-ready.

5 Steps Companies Need to Take Now

DATA INTELLIGENCE OVER DATA GRAVEYARDS: THE FOUNDATION FOR AI READINESS
In many companies, product, customer, and transaction data still sit in silos.
The result? Poor data quality, no scalability, and no real AI applications.
If you want AI, you need data. And not just any data – high-quality, unified data!
What companies need to focus on now:
The result? Poor data quality, no scalability, and no real AI applications.
If you want AI, you need data. And not just any data – high-quality, unified data!
What companies need to focus on now:
- Harmonize data across all channels
- Build a centralized data hub
- Integrate PIM Systems (Product Information Management)
- Leverage DXP platforms (Digital Experience Platforms)
#SPOTLIGHT
Why PIM & DXP Are Key to AI Readiness:
- PIM provides structured, complete, and centralized product data:
It ensures that product data is complete, accurate, and enriched – across all touchpoints. Only with clean, well-structured data can AI models be trained effectively, enabling things like automated product recommendations, predictive analytics, or dynamic pricing. Without a solid PIM system, the potential of AI in commerce remains fragmented and difficult to scale. - DXP orchestrates cross-channel experiences using contextual data from CRM & PIM: In a world where customers expect personalized, consistent experiences, a DXP acts as the control center for intelligent, data-driven customer journeys. This makes it a natural partner for AI: A DXP enriched with data from PIM and CRM feeds AI systems with real-time context – enabling true personalization at scale.
- Together, PIM & DXP form the technical foundation for real-time personalization, predictive analytics, and dynamic pricing.

AI NEEDS A CLEAR BUSINESS GOAL
Many companies are already using generative AI – but often just for minor process optimizations. The real power of AI only unfolds when it's applied strategically across the entire value chain. Let’s be clear: You need a goal. Here are a few examples:
- Automating customer service
- Optimizing inventory levels
- Boosting conversions with intelligent product recommendations

FROM TOOL QUESTION TO TRANSFORMATION QUESTION
AI isn’t just a tool – it’s a catalyst for transformation.
Adopting AI means more than integrating new software. It requires a shift in mindset, strong leadership, change management, and continuous learning. These are critical success factors for true AI readiness – whether in mid-sized companies or large-scale wholesale. It’s about:

PLATFORMS, PARTNERSHIPS, PERSPECTIVES
New value creation through platform models and open interfaces
No one has to – or can – master the AI transformation alone.
Successful commerce companies rely on strong partner ecosystems to move faster and avoid costly mistakes. At the same time, platform-based models and open APIs unlock entirely new ways to create value. What you need now:
